You know the story – a wedding singer is left at the alter by his fiancé. His waitress friend comforts him and her boyfriend just happens to be a jerk… I won’t spoil the ending for you!
If you’re a fan of the movie starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore then you’ll really enjoy this production. It’s full of lovely tunes and star turns. There have been a few revisions for the stage as you would imagine – the Boy George character is now an Adam Ant style character. Cyndi Lauder, Mr T, Billy Idol and Wonder Woman all appear too. I love things set in the 80s, we get to glimpse a de Lorean, a mobile phone the size of a shoe box and let’s not forget the haircuts.
This was a great night out but there was a but. The film of 1998 features an amazing roster of 1980s tracks from the likes of New Order, The Police, The Smiths and Culture Club. All of these are missing from the musical which consists almost entirely of original songs. Don’t get me wrong, the music is great but it wasn’t exactly the sing along to the hits of yesteryear that I expected.
The Wedding Sungir is on stage at the Grand Opera House in Belfast until April 15. For tickets and information go here.
