Me and him have just returned to east Belfast after living on the southside for a couple of years so we’re starting to rediscover all the little treasures the east has to offer.

We decided to nip out for a bite to eat one Friday night recently and wanted into the Mandarin City Chinese restaurant in Ballyhackamore. After they laughed us out of the place for not having a reservation we decided to chance our arm at Acapulco. It’s a Mexican restaurant that I’ve heard lots about but never been to.

And it was just lovely.

I’m only slightly ashamed to admit that I don’t have that many photos of the food as I was too busy snarfing it down.

OK, first things first. The restaurant has a varied drinks menu with wines, beers and soft drinks. But ignore all that and head straight to the margaritas. They are £7 each and they are HUGE!

There is so much choice on the Acapulco menu. I had the chipotle chicken wings to start and they were lovely – very tasty and with just a little kick instead of blowing your head off.

It’s not that varied a menu to be honest but all the favourites are there; fajitas, enchiladas, burritos and chilli. There are vegetarian options and even a vegan selection for the non-carnivores.

Everything is beautifully fresh and has loads of choices. I had the burrito with anatto pork and salsa fresca but I could have had steak or beef brisket with two other choices of salsa and it works the same for everything else.

The desserts look awesome including the yummy churros but we simply couldn’t fit them in.

The staff were lovely and there are some really good deals to be had there. There are mid-week early-bird specials at £12 for two courses and £15 for three before 6.30pm. According to their Facebook page the restaurant will also be doing Christmas nights and extra openings for the festive period.

It really was that good – boyfriend is even planning a second visit this week when he has friends come into town.
